Working towards Zayed's vision for nation

Abu Dhabi: A 1976 decree by the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan established the first national university in the UAE.
The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) was for some time the only higher education institution, preparing the young generation to meet UAE's national interests.
"Shaik Zayed was a visionary, for whom education was the fundamental component that empowers nations and propels its people to succeed as major players in the international arena," Dr Abdullah Al Khanbashi, Vice-Chancellor, told Gulf News.
"His dream for continuous development of a skilled Emirati workforce came true. More than 51,000 UAEU graduates provide leadership throughout the UAE, the Gulf region and the world," he added.
Nine colleges
The university grew with the country's socio-economic development. At the first graduation ceremony in 1981, 472 students, including 194 women, passed out of the institution. The 2011 graduating class is expected to see the graduation of 1,794 students 1,374 of them women. More than 12,300 students are enrolled in the university's undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.
Today, the university offers 71 bachelor's degree courses and 23 master's degrees in nine colleges. It is also the first national university to introduce doctoral research, with 70 students currently enrolled in three programmes.
Students from across the Emirates and more than 20 countries interact to create a vibrant campus and student life. Some 7,200 students live on the campus and enjoy a full range of activities and events that add a unique educational value.
Research focus
"The PhD programme is part of the wider strategy to increase research capability at UAEU and represents an important step in the transformation of UAEU into a world-class research-intensive university," Al Khanbashi said.
The UAEU was one of the first universities to be accredited internationally. Today, it ranks 338 worldwide. "Our target is to be among the top 100 research universities in the world within five years. This requires hard work and commitment," Al Khanbashi said.
"Research is the engine that drives advancement in technology, agriculture, medicine, law, economy and science; the development of research drives policy and underpins growth," Al Khanbashi added.
More than 730 faculty members, 200 of whom are Emiratis, add quality to the programmes.
UAEU boasts an impressive list of alumni, who hold prominent positions of influence helping UAE's growth. Some of them are ministers, ambassadors, judges and business moguls. "I learned in more than one university but I learned the most from UAEU," said Dr Maitha Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State.

So why wouldn't you want to expand your educational and cultural horizons through studying in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)? For this oil-rich Persian Gulf state has some of the finest universities in the whole Middle East region, with students from all corners of the world taking full advantage of the extensive range of degree courses on offer across a range of disciplines, from engineering, technology and science to business, arts and the media.
Who hasn't heard of fabulous Dubai, the largest city in the UAE? It's a city of around 2 million people with a deserved reputation as a glitzy tourist playground. But it's also a thriving and successful commercial hub where incredible fortunes can be made, and perhaps lost just as easily. It's therefore no surprise to find the universities in Dubai are cutting edge, too, reflecting and serving the needs of the city's rather diverse and cosmopolitan business community. They may not figure prominently in the top tier of world university rankings, but nevertheless Dubai's eclectic mix of higher educational establishments provide the levels of skills and expertise much sought after in today's well connected society.
